Background

Donald Yates
is one of the first
people behind this
website development.
It is an extension of his
father Colin Yates'
commitment to worker
welfare, mine safety and
support of the wider
community through the
Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The family home on the
Great Boulder Gold Mine was
VERY CLOSE to the action!

  mine home

"I grew up on the goldfields of Kalgoorlie, (well, actually Fimiston where the Great Boulder Gold Mine was located).
Home was close to the treatment plant and the two sulphur dioxide stacks. Was it healthy ... an interesting question. Did it inspire me to help others .. yes! My father was closely involved with the Great Boulder Gold Mine, (now part of Kalgoorlie's Superpit), as the Assistant Manager / Mine Superintendant.

Colin Yates' interests included a focus on mine economics, safety, good fun (starting the annual Christmas
Pageant) and the environment. He was closely involved with the introduction of ANFO in 1962 to the Goldfields
Mining operations. (He died in August 1964). Two other activities of Colin Yates was his keen interest in all
aspects of automated mining, (see the cartoon below, The Yates Universal Miner 1953), and the Royal Flying
Doctor Service. The first Beechcraft Baron was named the 'Colin Yates' when delivered in 1963 to the Eastern
Goldfields Section.

Donald Yates continues to combine both research and development in a range of smarter
and safer mining systems, together with the support networks to help the people and their
families which are the essence behind the whole mining and related industries.

Smart mining practies have a core of technologies, supported by '100 Little Things' that
together constitute an exciting range of greener and safer mining options.

Other team members! Team

And behind every project, there is a
dedicated team that makes it all happen ...
and we are no exception!

Starting top left and going clockwise,
we have Carlene and Coco, Coco has the
long legs & big ears. Oscar is in the middle and he is forever cuddling up to almost
anything with a textured edge.
In top right corner we have Carolynne
with her favourite roses.
Bottom right finds Louie in younger days
battling with a Bunnings bag.
And last, but by no means least, Cleo ... always on the move like the rabbit in
'Alice through the looking glass' ...
always concerned that she might be late!
