| What's the difference between cousins, second cousins and cousins once removed etc? It all depends on who your grandparents are |
|
| Cousins | These people have the SAME TWO GRANDPARENTS. They are the children of your aunts and uncles. |
| Second Cousins | These people have the SAME GREAT GRANDPARENTS but not the same grandparents. |
| Third Cousins | These people have the SAME GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS. Fourth, fifth etc ... just add extra generation layers! |
| 'Removed' | This is added to indicate that two people are from different generations. Once removed - there is a one generation difference. Twice removed - there is a two generation difference. Example: Cousins twice removed ... you are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed. |
