Which cousin are you?

Family     Which cousin are you?
  Back
  What's the difference between cousins,
second cousins and cousins once removed etc?

It all depends on who your grandparents are

Cousins These people have the SAME TWO GRANDPARENTS.
They are the children of your aunts and uncles.

Second Cousins These people have the SAME GREAT GRANDPARENTS
but not the same grandparents.

Third Cousins These people have the SAME GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS.
Fourth, fifth etc ... just add extra generation layers!

'Removed' This is added to indicate that
two people are from different generations.

Once removed - there is a one generation difference.
Twice removed - there is a two generation difference.

Example:
Cousins twice removed ... you are two generations younger
than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your
grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.
